KiCad was first released in 1992 and had constantly been updating and improving since then. The software has the primary functions of electronics designing software, and it can also be used for designing PCB boards. The software has IDE or Integrated Development Environment for PCB layout designs and for schematic capture. The software comes with tools that help the user to create artwork, bill of materials, 3D views, and Gerber Files of the PCB and its components.
The software is free-of-cost and is also open-sourced, which means you can alter the code according to your needs if you are interested. It is available for macOS, Linux, and Windows operating systems in over 23 languages for worldwide usage. The software coding is done in C++, which makes it fast software and yet lightweight. The source code of the software is present in a repository on GitHub, and it is open to the public under the GNU GPL (General Public License) v3+ license. Features
- The software comes with a schematic editor, which helps the software in creating your design without any limit in features. The software does not need any payment or anything like that for unlocking features.
- The software interface focuses the most on productivity, which means most of its tools work towards making the software efficient and simple to use. You can also make large designs using the software even when one sheet is too shot for the purpose. You can use the hierarchy method to fit all of it in multiple sheets.
- The software supports several formats for exporting the PCB designs, including PDF, HPGL, SVG, Postscript. The software gives you the option of creating professional-level PCBs with 32 layers of copper. The software now comes with a shove and push router, which can be used to route differential pairs and for interactively tuning trace lengths.
- The software automatically pushes forward traces if they are in the way, and in any case, if that is not possible, the software reroutes the path around the obstacles. The router does not violate your DRC constraints.
- KiCad is a software that comes with a 3D view which makes it easier to rotate and look at every angle of the designed PCB board, which makes it easier for the user to figure out if there is any problem with it. With the multiple-rendering feature, you can easily inspect the PCB with hide and show buttons.
How to download KiCad for your PC?
- 1. To download and install KiCad, click on the download button given on the top-right corner of the screen, which starts downloading your software setup. Click on the KiCad downloaded file to start the installation procedure.
- 2. On the first window of the installation, you will be shown the welcome note from the creator; click on the Next button to go to the next window, where you will be asked to agree to the End User’s License Agreement. Click on the I Agree button to do the same now; you are will be taken to the next window.
- 3. Here you will be asked for the location where you want to save your installation files; click on the address box to change the location or continue with the software's default location.
- 4. Now the final installation will take place; once that is done, click on the Finish button to exit the setup. Now you are ready to use KiCad.
